We all had a lot of fun this summer following the whirlwind engagement of Ariana Grande and Pete Davidson. We shared some laughs (BDE, what fun!), and in the end, we shared some tears as the engagement ended as quickly as it started.
After a brief period of mourning, Davidson has begun to bounce back, dealing with his heartbreak like any good comedian would: by making jokes about it. He broke his silence last week at a comedy benefit, cracking a few—refreshingly transparent—jokes about his own shattered heart and crippling loneliness.
And now, he’s brought the topic to his main gig on SNL, where he joked about the engagement in a promo for this weekend’s episode featuring host Jonah Hill. In the promo, he turns to musical guest Maggie Rogers and says, “I’m Pete. Do you want to get married?”
Get it? Like when he proposed to Ariana Grande after a few weeks of them hanging out. But, you know who didn’t find this funny? Ariana Grande herself.
In response to the promo video she sent a now-deleted tweet that read: “for somebody who claims to hate relevancy u sure love clinging to it huh”
She then quote tweeted this fan account and wrote, “hell naw tho”
Grande has been through a lot in the last year, including the tragic loss of her previous boyfriend Mac Miller, who died this summer. She’s now made it clear that she doesn’t like jokes about their broken engagement, so the best thing Davidson can do now is respect her wishes and find some new material.
