Justin Timberlake is an official Man of the Woods now, haven’t you heard? And as a flannel-wearing, stubble-sporting, card-carrying woodsman, he’s got to eat the part. So that explains why at the recent listening party for his new “back to nature” album, Man of the Woods, Timberlake feasted on ants and grasshoppers. Looks like we’ve got ourselves a regular Bear Grylls.
Not that Timberlake had his caterers dump a pile of insects onto guests’ plates. Noma’s own René Redzepi was tapped to create the menu, and his spin on nature was a bit more refined, if incredibly literal. The ants, according to a photo of the night’s menu, were served with black garlic and rose oil, while the grasshoppers accompanied aebleskiver, a Danish dessert pancake. Redzepi is famous for preparing meals with earthy ingredients—the menu at his upcoming Noma 2.0 is 100 percent dictated by the seasons. Other woodsy ingredients on the party menu included watercress, kelp, dried berries, and “wild beach plants.”
So far, the ants and grasshoppers are the only proof we’ve got that Timberlake has gone full Nature Boy—besides the trees and ferns decorating the party, and a tracklist—and guests were definitely incredulous. As the dishes were presented to them, Variety reports one member of the waitstaff could be heard repeatedly assuring them, “Yes, ants.” But because they were prepared by Redzepi, one of the best chefs in the world, there are probably a few more edible insect converts in the world today.
